The music of the composer Cornelius Gurlitt (1820-1901) is a good example of the German Romantic style. A student of Reinecke (in Copenhagen) and a friend to Schumann and Brahms in his home country, Gurlitt was in auspicious company as a musician and composer, writing mainly for his own instruments, piano and organ; his simple pieces for amateur players are the most beloved.

Sea Pink was originally written as to be performed on the piano but, in this arrangement for flute ensemble, it forms a rich tonal and expressive piece, providing a good introduction to independent entries and enharmonic note names. The opening and closing sections in G minor tonality share the melody between players over bell-like chords, whilst the brief, major section provides levity with an arching, cadenza-like link-passage for the first part player(s).

Review from Jane, adult flute choir member

We like playing this little piece in our flute choir.  It has a dreamy quality which is easy on the ear and provides a lovely contrast to some of the faster, more intricate pieces that we play. The arrangement is inclusive of all players, so that even our most junior players feel that they are contributing to the whole. A lovely, gentle piece.
