Today, the German composer Theodor Kullak (1818-1882) is most known for his music for piano. A pupil of Czerny – a composer noted by pianists for his finger studies – Kullak went on to become a teacher himself, setting up the Conservatoire for pianists, the ‘Neue Akademie der Tonkunst,’ in Berlin in 1855.

Kullak’s music is often based upon a programmatic (descriptive) theme, as was the fashion of the time, and this piece is no exception. Grandmama Tells A Ghost Story (originally written as a piano miniature) is a delightful piece for flute choir, utilising unusual phrase lengths, pauses and surprise entries and dynamics as part of its ‘storytelling’ nature. Although the piece can be performed with just four flutes its’ cheeky and spooky atmosphere is enhanced by the use of piccolo, alto and/or bass flute.
