The remarkable Russian composer Tchaikovsky first demonstrated his prodigious talent at an early age, shortly after beginning his piano studies aged just five. His music is best known for its beautiful melodies and intense expression, a reflection of the sensitivity of the man himself. Despite Tchaikovsky’s success throughout his life as a composer, he never achieved happiness in his private life and was known to have suffered with depression; his death from cholera at the age of fifty-three is suspected by many to have actually been caused by his own suicide.

Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy is from Tchaikovsky’s ballet ‘The Nutcracker’ (making it an ideal piece for Christmas), and is just one of the composer’s many famous ballet melodies. This arrangement can be performed by a minimum of four players but also works well with more than one player to a part; the melody, providing a useful entry into enharmonic note names, is shared between the first two parts whilst the bottom two parts remain suitable for elementary level players.
