Café Tango was inspired by the Latin American - specifically Tango - rhythms of the Argentinian composer Astor Piazolla; the letters C, A, F and E provided the initial inspiration for the melody introduced at the start of this piece. Café Tango is performed in several contrasting, linked sections; each flute part takes a share of the prominent lines, whilst the ensemble works tightly together to provide the energetic and rhythmical dance accompaniments.  The opening tune has an uplifting and carefree feel, and this leads into a more serious Tango in a minor key.  After a short transition a Bossa Nova-style accompaniment provides the basis for the romantic harmonised melody shared between parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 before leading back for a final rendition of the Café tune and a positive, jolly ending!

Review by Ana, Professional Player and Teacher, February 2016:

My flute students aged 9-12 love this piece. It is quite challenging for them, but they love the harmony so it is worth working hard to make it sound well. Ana (Professional/Teacher )
