The Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) had a clear and natural talent for music, however he trained, instead, as a priest and was ordained in 1703.  Not long after his ordination Vivaldi left the priesthood (he claimed ill health) and he began work at a Venetian Girls’ Orphanage; many of his compositions were given their first performances at the school. His output was extremely prolific, writing vocal and instrumental music on both large and small scales; the concerto was his most important form, and it is thought that Vivaldi established the three-movement (fast-slow-fast) model that is still used today.

Vivaldi wrote four expressive concertos named after the seasons, to be performed on violin with string orchestra accompaniment. This arrangement depicts the tutti (orchestral) sections of Autumn’s most famous tunes, with the optional alto and bass flutes suggesting the sound of the low strings of the orchestra.
